So long, Farewell...

Have an awesome week friends! Husband, Anne, Will, and I are headed up North. Thank the Lord it will not be in the hundreds up there as here in Hotlanta. We are going to visit my in-laws and go to the lake and camp.

Long hair

In the picture below you will see that my hair has become very long. It's about 3/4 of the way down my back. My husband and I both like my hair. It's my joke that I may not have the body of a Victoria's Secret model (working on it), but I can have the hair!

With the sun, heat, and chlorine of summer living I have done some recent changes in hair care. Normally I use whatever shampoo is at Costco. I have been drying out my hair. My husband was complaining of the frizz so it has stayed in a braid for months. I got sick of that look so I did something about the frizz. I changed products. I thought about when my hair was the healthiest and went back to Paul Mitchell. It's a bit more expensive, but so worth it to not be embarrassed. I've also learned that I only need to wash my hair every other day and to only wash my scalp. Also, when washing, leave the conditioner on while cleansing the rest of your body then rinse with cool water. Do not blow dry your hair unless necessary and use the coolest setting. Use a heat serum if you flat iron or curl your hair to lock in moisture. I've started using Sun-In again to achieve my highlights.

Wardrobe Wednesday: Color

This, and knowing your body type, are the 2 biggest answers for: what do I wear? I'm serious. It doesn't matter if a dress is $6k Chanel or $16 Target if it doesn't look good on your body or coloring. Two weeks ago I did a post on figuring out your body type. If you still have questions, feel free to ask me.

Story: I was a Girl Scout Gold Award winner. My Gold Award project was building self-esteem in young girls. I went to 3 different Junior scout troops and gave the troops speeches on loving themselves and taking care of themselves. This is a time in their lives when they start caring about how they look and other girls care about how they look. One of the things I taught them was what color "season" they have and what colors to wear. I gave their parents a copy of colors for them. Obviously, their bodies will change so I didn't spend much time on that subject, but I did talk about hygiene and taking care of their bodies. In the end, we did a runway show. The girls were so sweet! One little girl, Ashlynn, really came out of her shell while I was working with the troop and that was the goal. She felt SO beautiful and proud of herself at that fashion show. This is when I decided to go into the fashion business.

So, how do you find out what colors work best for you and your skintone? I have found two websites to help you out (Define Your Season and the original, Color Me Beautiful), but I will give you my tips on figuring it out. Or you can come to Atlanta and I'll help you! ;) My favorite class in fashion school was Wardrobe Consulting. My teacher had her own wardrobe consulting business and she said that this is the most difficult to figure out on your own. So, grab a husband, daughter, and/or friend and have them sit down. If you went to a store and did a seasonal coloring analysis, they will do what's called draping. They take drapes of cloths and put them up next to your face and see which colors make your face LIGHT UP! That's the key, what makes you LIGHT UP and even your skintone!

  1. Warm or Cool colors: put a silver bracelet on 1 wrist and gold bracelet on another wrist or gold necklaces. If gold looks best against your skin then you're a warm (Spring, Autumn). If silver looks best against your skin then you're a cool (Summer, Winter).
  2. Put on a white or black shirt and look at your skintone. Does your skin look drained or even? If you look really good then you're more than likely a winter. If not, then move on.
  3. If you burn then tan, then you're a summer.
  4. Spring's have the classic peaches 'n cream complexion.
  5. You don't have to have red hair to be a Autumn. Eva Mendes is a autumn because she has red highlights in her hair and golden undertones.
  6. Once you figure out what is your season, then do not worry as much on if you're a clear, soft, light, or deep...If you're a winter, wear cool, clear colors. If you're an Autumn, wear colors of the landscape. If you're a spring, lighten up the Autumn colors. If you're a summer, think of the sky and flowers and the beach.
  7. Big Tip: Has anyone ever said you look like a celebrity or you know you have coloring like them, look them up online and see what colors their professional stylists have them wear. This also works for body shape. For instance, my coloring is very much like Giada De Laurentiis. She wears light bright colors. (Turquoise, pink, lavender, coral/salmon, and navy). I wish though I had her petite frame! Working on it...
Once you find out your color season, print out the picture above, laminate it, and put it in your wallet. When you go shopping, think, okay, I'm a hourglass shape with light summer coloring, if it doesn't meet that criteria do not waste your money on it. Remember if you look good, you feel good!

Correct fitting clothes

This is an example of ill-fitting and unflattering clothing. Since I've been dieting my body has changed so much. Yes, I've lost weight, but more so my body has changed shape. I've gone from all over chunky to a hourglass with a slight pear shape.

Did y'all know that I have a BFA in Fashion Marketing? Yes, 10 years ago this month I graduated from fashion school. Because of my weight and feeling so uncomfortable in my skin and clothes I have shied away from doing posts on fashion. I love helping others dress for their coloring, body type, and style. Someday, when the economy picks back up, I hope to start my own wardrobe consulting business. So, this week I'm going to do a few posts, as time allows, on how to dress for success. I don't mean success for money, but personal success as in when you look good you feel good.

In the shirt above, which is a cute tee shirt from LL Bean and athletic shorts from Adidas, I look frumpy. Why do I look frumpy? Because the clothes are baggy. Now on a woman with more of a belly, this shirt would look great! Since I have a smaller waist, but still have larger "girls", this is not a well-fitting shirt for me. This is unflattering as it hangs from my chest. I have this same issue with A-line maxi dresses. For larger women or women without large chests or women with larger stomachs these dresses are perfect for them. For women with a smaller waist, they make one look pregnant unless they are small all over. The photo below shows the same look in a fitted shirt that is way more flattering.

Here is a quick outline of body types and styles that work:

Athletic/Boy: Ladies without curves need to create the illusion of curves. Padded bras, belts, or jewelry around the neckline will give the illusion of a larger chest and a waist. These women can wear the maxi dresses and the popular loose fitting clothes, but they should accentuate their leanness as much as possible. Modestly.

Pear: Pear shape are women with junk in their trunk. I've been that woman. I still am a bit. I do not want to emphasize my hiney at all. One needs to wear dark bottoms and prints or brights at the top. My daughter is a plus size pear shape. She can pull off the maxi dresses in a larger size because they skim the body. You don't want anything that is tight in your "problem" area.

Apple: This woman has a large midsection and often thin legs. For this body type, you are lucky, because most of the clothing out on the market is geared for y'all. You want to wear a-line dresses that show off your legs, larger blouses with leggings, empire waist dresses and shirts. Do not wear a lot of prints on your top though.

Inverted Triangle: Bigger on the top and small on the bottom. These women should show off their assets of smaller legs. While not emphasizing their "girls", they can't be hidden and should wear slightly fitted tops. These ladies tend to have large chests, smaller yet not small stomachs, and small hips and thighs. Pencil skirts are great for this type.

In every style, make sure you have the right size. Nothing spoils a cute dress like it being too big or too small. Many women do not want to show their bodies, and I'm not talking skin, that is for your husband. Most women look best in clothing that skims your body. Also, do not be afraid to go up in size. Different brands cut sizes differently. For instance, I can wear a 12 in Walmart but need a 14 in LL Bean. I also have found in Polo shirts and tees men's small fits me better than ladies as I am 5'9. So, once you know your body type think outside the box!

National Iced Tea Month

June is National Iced Tea Month. As a Southerner it is in my blood. I actually prefer all of my drinks chilled (Iced coffee, iced tea, iced water with mint). Until recently, quite literally as I drank my weight in it every week. My sister and I have been addicts for years. Since I've been dieting I don't drink it very often primarily because of the calories. When you only have 500 calories a day, you have to be selective. Now I drink fruit flavored teas. My favorite is peach tea. Sonic has the best (and if you go between 2-5 every day then you get it half off!). It's low calorie yet delicious. At home I make Celestial Seasonings Country Peach, yet, let's face it, it's not as good. I also have various fruit teas from Trader Joe's. This way, you have the sweetened fruity taste without the calories from the sugar.

You always want something that you can't have. I can't bicycle. Don't get me wrong I can actually ride a bike, but because of a bad ankle I can't physically ride a bike. I love the ambiance of bicycle riding. My dream is to live in a community where you can bicycle everywhere without the fear of being hurt. My husband rides his bike to work most days this summer. It's a 6 mile ride one way. He loves it! He does say that it is quite scary sometimes (we live in a large metropolitan city), but thankfully he can ride on the sidewalk 90% of the time.

Some day I hope it is God's plan for my ankle to be healed to where I can ride my bike to the farmer's market, library, post office, etc. without the risk of being mowed down. Here are some cute bicycling photos from my Tumblr.
