On Wednesday I was out running errands. It was a nice day. I had a French thing going on that day with my hair in a bun on top of my head, aviators, navy and white stripe shirt, khaki shorts, and nude ballet flats. As I went into various stores, I noticed a few of the elderly men stared at me. I was afraid that I had toilet paper stuck to the bottom of my shoe. So, I just held my head high and grocery shopped. A few of the men did head nods and one gentleman even tipped his hat towards me! I love senior citizen day!
Today I went to more stores and wore a long striped t-shirt (similar but in navy & peach) and leggings so I was covered from head to toe. There were not too many men, but those that I saw stared at me, like the older men, but in a demeaning way. Why is that okay? Why is it okay for men to ogle women...to think they have that right?
Is it because they have not been taught manners? Is it because they are misogynistic? Is it because Generation X and younger are self-absorbed? Is it because of the porn industry?
In my opinion, manners do matter. If you think a girl is pretty, then take a glance, but then move your eyes along. Looking at a girl up and down and making them feel self-conscious because you're undressing her with your eyes and imagining her on a website is not cool. It makes me feel gross. I shouldn't feel gross coming out of Trader Joe's.
I realize that not many men read my blog, so I may not be making any change, but I hope that us mothers/grandmothers/aunts of young men can lead them in using their manners. Glance, tip your hat, be nice...you have no right to do anything otherwise unless a girl invites you to verbally.
